Heinz taught courses in religious ethics, sociology of religion, Christianity, and death and dying. His main interest is the role of religion in public space. His perspectives include theology, social ethics, sociology, anthropology, and ritual studies. His book "The Last Passage: Recovering a Death of Our Own" (Oxford, 1999) argues for more elaborate, thoughtful, empowering, and religiously adequate rites of last passage in the American social context.
Forthcoming with Fortress Press is his book “Christmas: The Risk of Incarnation,” which is a cultural and religious history of the festival of Christmas.
Heinz previously served as dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at California State University, Chico. He has done extensive international research, study and teaching. He is an ordained Lutheran minister (ELCA).
