Thank our military on the 4th of July.

On July 4th, we commemorate the anniversary of our country’s independence with parades, picnics, and fireworks spectaculars. And rightfully so. We have a lot to to be thankful for. As we enjoy the holiday with family and friends, it’s easy to forget the many sacrifices it takes each and every day to hold on to the liberty our founding fathers secured so many years ago. So as you celebrate, take a few minutes to remember that it is because of the dedication of our military men and women that have our freedom at all.

Showing appreciation to those who protect us both at home and abroad is a lot more than just saying “thank you for your service,” and you don’t need to wait for a national holiday to do it. Below are a few ways you can let our active duty and veterans know that their sacrifices have not gone unnoticed. Even the smallest gesture can make a huge difference in a hero’s life.

Ways to thank our military all year long.

Support Veteran-owned businesses.
Lend a hand to a military spouse or family.
Pay it forward (See a service person in uniform? Pay for their meal, their coffee, or their drink.)
Hire a veteran or military spouse or support businesses that do.
Offer discounts to active duty and veterans, or ask your business to.
Support worthwhile charities and organizations that offer help to veterans.
Visit or volunteer at nursing homes with large populations of Veterans.
Volunteer with a veterans organization.
As a veteran about his or her service, then listen.
Send care packages or letters from home.

Fireworks can be troublesome for veterans who are suffering from PTSD.

Loud noises that sound like gunfire and other explosive blasts can trigger post-traumatic stress disorder. The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs estimates 11% to 20% of military members who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan suffer from the condition in a given year. Read the full story
