Organic burial pods or how to become a tree when you die.

How would you like to become a tree when you die? An Italian group is trying to give you that option with their unique take on green burial — the burial pod.

The group’s project, Capsula Mundi, would enable the deceased to be encapsulated in a biodegradable burial pod. A tree would then be planted over the top of that. Over time, the remains and the pod would decompose and become part of what the creators of the concept have termed a memory forest.

The idea of coming full circle and returning whence we came from is one that appeals to many of us, regardless of our faith (or lack thereof), and this is an idea captured perfectly by this beautiful new burial method developed in Italy. The Capsula Mundi project by designers Anna Citelli and Raoul Bretzel has developed an organic, biodegradable burial capsule that will turn the deceased’s body into nutrients for a tree that will grow out of their remains.

Italian law does not currently permit this type of burial but the group is working to introduce legislation that would change that.
