Actor and comedian Robin Williams, whose first big break as a comic actor came in the ’70s TV comedy Mork & Mindy, passed away on Aug. 11, 2014. He was 63.

Although Williams started out as a stand-up comic, he quickly progressed to comic acting, later taking on roles of surprising depth. His first television role was “Lawyer/Man with Toothache” on Can I Do It ‘Till I Need Glasses? in 1977. Dozens of television and movie credits (more than 100) include his Oscar-winning role in Good Will Hunting. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, playing psychotherapist Sean Maguire to Matt Damon’s Will Hunting. Other notable roles included appearances in Dead Poets Society and Good Morning Vietnam.

Sadly, Robin Williams took his own life; his body was found by his personal assistant in his home. He had fought a public battle with depression and substance abuse for many years. In a statement released to the New York Times, his wife, Susan Schneider, said, “This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope that the focus will not be on Robin’s death but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.”

Williams is survived by his wife, Susan, and three children from two previous marriages: Zak, Zelda, and Cody.
