Do I have to go up to the casket?

When going to funerals of people we do not know very well (example: co-worker’s grandparent) – do we need to go up to the casket at the viewing or is it ok to give our respects to the family without going up to the casket?

You do not need to go up to the casket and view the deceased in the case where you did not know the person who is deceased.

However, if the friends or family that you are there to see are standing near the casket, then you should approach without hesitation and greet them.
